Antioxidants help against Hearing Loss

A recent study done by the University of Floridahttp://www.ufl.edu, along with researchers from the University of Wisconsin, revealed that antioxidants could help protect against hearing loss. The test identified a protein that appears to be the key cause of oxidative damage to cells, which results in hearing loss. One way to protect yourself from this oxidative damage is to eat foods rich in antioxidants.

One popular theory related to aging says that damage to oxidative cells caused by free radicals harms the mitochondria, the energy center of cells. After months and years of continual damage, proteins in the mitochondria are released and cause cells to die. This essentially leads to a host of physical effects associated with aging -- including hearing loss.

Make sure to visit your local professional audiologist to see if you or a loved one suffers from hearing loss. It is important to catch the symptoms of hearing loss and treat it before its too late.

Family Members influence Loved Ones with Hearing Loss

Recently, the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) did a survey of nearly 47,000 households and more than half (51%) of new first-time owners of hearing aids indicated that family members were a key factor in influencing their purchase of a new hearing aid in 2008. Fifty-five percent of new hearing aid users looked for treatment once they realized how serious their hearing loss problem was. BHI offers a free confidential online hearing test at www.hearingcheck.org where you can check the severity of your hearing loss in the comfort of your own home.

Many patients are in denial of their hearing loss problems and don’t even bother getting tested, which poses a significant barrier to their well being. People with signs of hearing loss often ask family member to repeat information and essentially making them act as their ears. What these family members don’t realize is that they are actually doing more harm then actually helping by acting as their ears.

Hearing loss is one of the most commonly unaddressed health conditions in America today, and affects more than 34 million Americans. Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide range of physical and emotional conditions, including irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, avoidance or withdrawal from social situations, social rejection and loneliness, reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety, impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks, reduced job performance and earning power, and diminished psychological and overall health.

The most loving action a family member can take with someone in denial of their hearing loss problem is seek help for them. Reach out to your loved one by making them an appointment with their local professional audiologist. This is the most selfless gift you can give your loved one this season.

Professional Hearing Aid Services in Miami Florida

If you or a loved one suffer from hearing loss, it is important to get immediate professional assistance. Living in such a loud city as Miami makes it especially difficult to live with a hearing loss problem. Loud background noises and high volumes can cause one who has a hearing loss problem to feel fatigued and stressed out. This can eventually result to one avoiding social activities, feel less independent, and worry about their safety.

One way to overcome these feelings of anxiety and stress as a result of hearing loss it to purchase a hearing aid from a professional physician. Hearing aids do not restore normal hearing, but they may help people with hearing loss function and communicate more easily. Dr. Joseph K. Duran and Yvette Duran Someillan are a brother and sister duo who just opened their professional services to the Miami public. Dr. Joseph Duran received his doctorate in audiology at the University of South Florida. Based on their years of involvement with the sale of hearing instruments, the Duran’s have been able to keep their finger on the pulse of any and all new technological advancements in their field. They are able to empathize with their patients and understand how hearing loss, when untreated, can lead to other health related problems such as stress, fatigue, decreased self-confidence, and in extreme cases, depression.
