Sting: Concerned about Hearing Damage

There are many organizations dealing with a variety of topics, which have been represented by famous individuals. One such organization, which deals with hearing health is Hear the World, which was created by Phonak. Hear the World uses the help of their Celebrity Ambassadors to create awareness about hearing loss.

New Generation Miami Hearing center has decided to name Sting, the Ambassador for this week. Sting or Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner is a talented musician known by all. He started his career after quitting as a school teacher and seeking out his American drummer friend Stewart Copeland. This is when the band “The Police” was created. After many successful years and a world tour, the band decided to part ways.

Sting has now become a very famous solo artist. He is known all over the world with singles such as “If you love somebody, set them free”. He has also won eleven Grammies, but that doesn't stop there. Sting has also been conscious about his surroundings, and has supported many causes and humanitarian rights. He has also created the “Rainforest Foundation” which deals with helping our planet.

As a musician, it would only make sense that Sting would support the Hear the World Campaign. In his words “Our hearing is not only integral to how we communicate, but also how we experience the world around us". He also knows how important it is to use hearing aids in the correct way, supporting hearing education.

Factors Contributing to Miami Teens Hearing Damage

Factors affecting people’s hearing and its contribution to deafness and the inevitable use of hearing aids are being put under the microscope with a new study done by scientists. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a new study that suggested that one in five US teens is exhibiting some form of hearing loss. This number is a 30 percent increase from 15 years ago. Who ever would have thought that teens could suffer hearing damage at such a young age?

The study compared data totaling 4,699 participants between 12-19 between 1998-1994 and 2005-2006. These surveys measured teenagers hearing and found there was an increase in the symptoms of mild to severe hearing loss that jumped from 3.5 percent to 5.3 percent.

Researchers were not able to pinpoint what factors leading to such an increase in hearing loss among our youth, however factors that were considered included participants economic and ethnic background, history of ear infections and noise exposure.

Exposure to loud music and sounds, which are relevant to teens today, were some of the general risk factors of Miami hearing loss. Audiologists at Miami hearing aid centers believe that young people are being exposed to these risks from their daily usage of iPod/MP3 player.

Cell Phones Create Ringing Ears

People use their cell phones in multiple ways from checking emails, texting, even it's while they are driving, to reading news articles, listening to music, and even video conferencing. But has the age of cell phones and its obscenely apparent usage among society created health risks? New Generation hearing centers has seen the impact of cell phones on their clients and their hearing and know it is becoming a major dilemma.

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine online journal states, “Regularly using a mobile phone for at least four years seems to be associated with a doubling in the risk of developing chronic tinnitus - persistent ringing in the ears, roaring or hissing sounds in the ear” known as Tinnitus, or ringing of the ears.

A study was done with 100 patients who needed treatment for tinnitus. All test subjects were asked about their mobile phone usage and the intensity and duration of calls, era preference, and use of hand held devices. Their report showed that all participants were cell phone users, but only 84 patients were using a mobile phone when their symptoms appeared.

When analyzing the results the patients who used a mobile phone before the beginning of tinnitus were 37% more likely to have the condition then those in their comparison group. Those who used their mobile phones on an average of 10 minutes a day were 71% likely to have the condition.

Miami deafness should not be taken lightly and Miami hearing centers are trying to educate citizens on the importance of hearing health and ways to avoid developing hearing loss and hearing damage. So put down that cell phone and give your ears a rest.

Hearing Health with Placido Domingo

New Generations Miami Hearing Centers initiative is to provide awareness of hearing health to its South Florida residents. That is why New Generation is part of Hear the World a program by Phonak. Hear the World provides an outlet for consumers through hearing education, news and events and their celebrity ambassadors.

An ambassadors presented from Hear the World is Placido Domingo. Placido sees the importance of the initiative, and Dr. Duran of New Generation. “We were made aware of a problem that gets worse every day: people losing their sense of hearing.” Placido is more concerned with the youth today and their exposure to the increasing noise pollution that surrounds them, especially cities like Miami, “young people are affected, when they spend too much time at discos or with an iPod in their ears.”

Placido wants people to understand how hasty they are being with their hearing “, I would certainly like to give people a wake-up call before it is too late.” People take for granted the ability to hear and make changes to their hearing lifestyle when it is too late.

Placido Domingo, thankfully, does not suffer from hearing loss himself however, he knows the importance of silence, “after practicing for five or six hours with the orchestra – my ears need to get some rest. It is very important to give them some silent periods.”

Hearing damage can be prevented as long the right precautions are taken. That is why celebrities like Placido Domingo work with Hear the world in the education of hearing health.
