Exposure To Music May Prevent Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can occur due to many reasons, including aging. As we grow older hair cells found in the inner ear are damaged. These hair cells help send signals to the brain that are later translated into sound. What can we do to prevent hearing damage or reduce the likelihood of this occurring?
As to the director of the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern University, Nina Kraus, explains, “If you spend a lot of your life interacting with sound in an active manner, then your nervous system has made lots of sound-to-meaning connections."
To test this theory, she performed a study with 45 to 65 years old musicians and non-musicians. The groups were told sentences in a noisy environment. The results of the study showed “the musicians were 40 percent better than non-musicians at tuning out background noise and hearing the sentences.”
If you have some musical background, continuing to expose yourself to music might help protect hearing health. If you have recently noticed you’re having a hard time making out sentences in a noisy environment, it is important to visit a Miami Hearing Center. An audiologist will be able to diagnose your level of hearing loss and help treat it accordingly.

How Riding A Motorcycle Can Affect Hearing Health
Some Americans ride motorcycles, as their main means of transportation. Although it may save you money on fuel, it can negatively affect your hearing health.
The National Journal of The Royal Society of Medicine (JRSM) discusses the negative effects of this practice on your hearing health, due to constant exposure to the “turbulent airflow around the helmet” known as wind-noise. Various studies have been done placing a microphone under the helmet, close to the ear to measure sound levels. The results showed an increased level of noise around the helmet (about 90 dB(A) at 60 km/h which is loud enough to cause hearing damage.
If you use a motorcycle as a means of transportation on a regular basis, you may suffer from hearing loss. It is important to visit a local audiologist, such as Dr. Joseph Duran, to receive a hearing evaluation that will determine the level of hearing loss. Early treatment will improve your quality of life.
